brianjohn Posted 26 May , 2014 Share Posted 26 May , 2014 2Lt David Gordon Gray of 4th Bn Queens Own (Royal West Kent) was killed on 31st Sept. 1917. According to "The Long Long Trail" the 1/4th Bn Royal West Kents were in India throughout the war. I must admit I find the naming of Regiments/Battalions/Brigades somewhat confusing so I am probably wrong with my assessment. From the date of his death I assume they were in action in the 3rd Battle of Ypres. Regards Brian
johnboy Posted 27 May , 2014 Share Posted 27 May , 2014 His MIC shows him as Pte 1918 14 London Regiment and 2Lt RWK. Entered theatre of war 15/9/14. Not sure how to find when he transferred.
Colin W Taylor Posted 27 May , 2014 Share Posted 27 May , 2014 Brian The LLT will also tell you the movements of the 2/4th bsttalion - he probably served with them. Regards Colin
johnboy Posted 27 May , 2014 Share Posted 27 May , 2014 My feeling is that he may have gone to France with 1/14th (County of London) Battalion (London Scottish which landed France 16/9/14. This could tie in with his date of entry to theatre if they sailed the night before.
Colin W Taylor Posted 27 May , 2014 Share Posted 27 May , 2014 Brian Apologies; he would likely have been serving with 3/4th Queen's Own RWK; they joined 17th Division. As Johnboy states he would have served abroad as an enlisted man with 14th Londons before being gazetted into the RWK in August 1916. Apologies for the bum steer above. Kind regards Colin
Jonathan Saunders Posted 27 May , 2014 Share Posted 27 May , 2014 He was commissioned into the 4th (T.F.) Bn but attached elsewhere. Presently I can't find any additional details for him in my RWK database so assume he was attached outside the Regiment. His officer file at Kew - WO374/28724 - would provide details.
