Acquilla Steele joined up on 19 January 1915. He was initially posted to 3rd Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment for training and then to 1st Battalion for service in France, where he arrived on 26 May 1915. He was then transferred to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment on 12 October 1916 and served with 8th Battalion before being transferred to the Royal Engineers on 10 July 1917 and seems to have served with 369 Forestry Coy. He remained in France until 3 April 1919 and was eventually demobilised as a Class Z reservist.

Details of the activities of each battalion and regiment are given in the Long Long Trail.

There is a Medal Index Card on ancestry here. The regiments are not written in the correct order.

Some more links, in case they are helpful. 1st Bn East Lancs were part of 11th Brigade in 4th Division (some details here) and 8th Loyal North Lancs were in 7th Brigade of 25th Division (here).

The records do not seem to refer to him being wounded other than for a letter from his wife, Nancy, asking for an update on his health which is undated but there is a note saying that a reply was sent on 2 June 1916. This gives you an idea as to the date that he was injured and it makes sense that he was transferred from the East Lancs to the Loyal North Lancs when he had recovered.

I am trying to work out which battles he fought in but his dates seem to suggest he joined mid battles.

1st bat east lancs 2nd battle of yepes albert and translay

does this sound right and where is the best place to get more information about where he would have been in the battle

8th batt loyal north lancs

The Division was in action at The Battle of Bazentin, The Battle of Pozieres and The Battle of the Ancre Heights. -

again the dates seem to be confusing

HELP me understand it all

The best source for details of the day to day activities of each battalion will be the War Diaries. Many of these can be downloaded from the National Archives. here is a link to the 8th Loyal North Lancashires, for example and here is the link to the 1st East Lancs.
