Private Alfred James Hacon, Norfolk Regt, family connection puzzle.

I wonder if any member could please help me resolve a family connection puzzle.

I am related to Private Alfred James Hacon, numbers 4301 and 240915, who died in Palestine 19th April 1917 whilst serving with the 1st/5th battalion Norfolk Regiment.

Whilst looking on the Great Yarmouth roll of Great War Dead I noted 3 others named Hacon. I particually noted Herbert George Hacon, Private 2576, 1st/5th battalion Norfolk Regt

Killed in action 12th August 1915 aged 17. (He also had an elder brother William Charles Hacon died a Captain in the RAF 19th February 1919).

I am sure that Alfred James is related to Herbert George but cannot make the family connection. Tried constructing a family tree without success. Any ideas or comments gratefully received.

1901 Census?

I suspect they are cousins and the family connection probably needs earlier census search. Probably 1871 or 1881.

I've gone back far enough to establish that they weren't first cousins.

This despite a tremendous effort by Alfred Thain Hacon (B.1837) who was prolific.

Alfred Thain Hacon was indeed prolific. Been searching Herbert's father's line, William George Hacon born in Great Yarmouth September 1857. Cannot connect him to Alfred Thain Hacon though.

Spent a couple of days constructing Hacon family trees based in Great Yarmouth. Cannot connect them although probably distant cousins. Hacon a common surname in Great Yarmouth then.

Spent ages searching through my Hacon family tree. By no means a common surname with only 19 medal card index entries. Found 6 I could link immediately to my ancestry with a few others as possibles. Decided to research every Hacon listed.

Alfred James Hacon 1896-1917 Norfolk Regt 4301&240915

Robert Thain Hacon 1898-1959 Norfolk Regt 321040&5765081

Herbert Thain Hacon 1893-1979 A.S.C. S-256100

Henry Edward Hacon 1894-1976 R.F.A. Terr.Force 920&875104

Harold Charles Hacon 1899-? East Kent Rent G/26713

Arthur Henry Hacon 1892-1972 Lincs Regt. 15941

Any information relating to any other Hacon on the medal card index would be very welcome.

I originally started this topic to discover whether Alfred James Hacon 1st/5th Batt. Norfolk Regt. was connected to Herbert George Hacon 1st/5th Batt. Norfolk Regt.

I can now say they were cousins although not first cousins. The confusion occurred when one Hacon cousin married another Hacon in early Victorian times.

I have Alfred James, Robert Thain, Henry Edward and Harold Charles Hacon in my family tree! They were all brothers and their parents were Henry Edward Hacon and Emily Bland.

My Grandmother was Dorothy Alice Woods, Nee Hacon she was Alfreds niece

I am in the process of the family tree work at the moment

But have not started on the Hacon line yet

The Woods line I have traced to 1747

Both families came from the same area mostly all based around the Great Yarmouth district

So their are some major connections between the two family lines

Just thought you might like to know
