psc945 Posted 25 May , 2014 Posted 25 May , 2014 Just trying to understand the patches placed on the back of the Uniform. Not sure timescale for this being done. I understand it came in to show who you were following in Battle, I have been looking at the actual patches used on the East Yorkshire reg Uniforms in WW1. The first pic is where I have managed to interpret the written section in David Biltons book, The Hull Pals, pg 241 ( 3rd pic downloaded here) This shows the red and white square as , red over white. Used on Pagri and back of uniform. Yet the book contradicts this when he mentions the 10th Battalion. Then the picture shown in the 'Tommy's War, British Military Memorabilia, 1914-1918, book by Peter Doyle, shows the brigade patch on the arm, with white over red.I am using logic here but may be wrong, that the patch in the Peter Doyle book is from a uniform and with it having the three red stripes showing Third Battn. This seems correct. Unless they used it red over white for the back of the tunic. need more pics or correct info to verify this. This shows that even the dedicated researcher can confuse things.Unless as in the 31st Division patch it depends whether it is depicting Yorkshire or Lancashire, then white over red would be Yorkshire. Or is that too easy.
psc945 Posted 30 May , 2014 Author Posted 30 May , 2014 Has anyone got links to other section of this site which may help with understanding battle patches and wearing on back of tunic. Paul C
