Turns88 Posted 25 May , 2014 Posted 25 May , 2014 Hello, While researching my Grandfathers service with 3 Company (previously D Company) 1/4 Seaforth Highlanders I discovered that he was wounded in action while at High Wood between 23 - 26 July 1916. My question is can anyone tell me what action he would have been participating in during those days? It appears from my research that on the way out of the line his Company may have been caught up in a gas attack near Mametz Wood. Also, I have no information as to what happened to him after he was wounded up until the point he arrived at Oakbank hospital in Glasgow on the 1 August 1916, where he spent a number of months recovering. What would have happened to him after being wounded? What medical facilities would he have through on his way back to Glasgow? Any idea of which port he would have left France from and which port he would have landed in the UK? Any information would be appreciated. Regards Wayne
seaforths Posted 18 June , 2014 Posted 18 June , 2014 There are lots of on line resources you can check. The war diary for them is possibly available now for download from TNA. There are also books such as the History of the 51st Highland Division which I think is free to access online. A book published by Colin Campbell last year 'Engine of Destruction' is also very good. Edit: I don't know when he enlisted and went overseas but the 4th Seaforth War Diaries are split over two Divisions as they were originally with the Meerut Division before transferring to the 51st Highland Division. They moved to the 51st at the beginning of January 1916 after transferring out of the Meerut Division, I think in November. They were with another division temporarily in between.
Turns88 Posted 18 June , 2014 Author Posted 18 June , 2014 Thank you very much for your reply and information. I have a copy of the M M Haldane book which is almost like a war diary for 1/4 Seaforth. He enlisted in Sept 1914 and went to France with them Nov 1914 and was wounded July 1916. Excuse my ignorance but is TNA National Archives? I will take a look at both the publications you have recommended. Thank you again Wayne
seaforths Posted 18 June , 2014 Posted 18 June , 2014 Sorry, yes, The National Archives it is. His time would span the Meerut division and 51st HD judging by the dates you have given.
