His army service record and information about his medals is available at Ancestry, under the name Walter Ishmael.

According to his service records on ancestry, he attested on 1 September 1914, was trained by 10th Battalion in the UK and then posted to 6th Battalion on 28 August 1915, joining them at Gallipoli on 17 September 1915 (this date is given on his Medal Index Card). The Battalion was evacuated from Gallipoli to Egypt via Mudros in Greece in December 1915. They then sailed from Port Said in Egypt to Basra in the Persian Gulf, where they arrived on 1 March 1916.
