The National Archives have a Medal Card for him (Ref WO 372/1/122152). It shows that he was a Bombadier in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

There are Service Records for 180 'John Arrowsmiths' held by Ancestry. if you have some additional information about him you may be able refine the results. However a large number of records were destroyed during WW2.

Amanda,

Do you know which battery he was serving with?

Charles De Gaulle?
