In a biography of a German World War II War Criminal the following appered IN german {Sorry I cant read this}

"Bis September 1918 kämpfte er als Soldat in Frankreich und geriet dann in französische Gefangenschaft, aus der er Anfang 1920 entlassen wurde".

What does it translate to?

"By September 1918, he fought as a soldier in France and then got captured by the French, from which he was released in early 1920."

I would translate: "Until September 1918, ..."
