tootrock Posted 22 May , 2014 Posted 22 May , 2014 I notice that the men who were killed when the Armed Trawler "Briton" was sunk by a mine on 21 July 1915 were all from the Royal Naval Reserve, bar one, who was from the Royal Fleet Reserve. What was the difference in these two organisations, and how did one qualify for each? Martin
John Milner Posted 22 May , 2014 Posted 22 May , 2014 Royal Naval Reserve is the Navy equivalent of the Territorial Army. Royal Fleet Reserve = Ex-regulars who served pensionable time. Regards John
seaJane Posted 22 May , 2014 Posted 22 May , 2014 John has it right on RFR - more information here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pbtyc/RFR/RFR.html - but I believe I'm right in saying that the RNVR was more closely parallel to the TA, consisting as it did of volunteers not necessarily having any connection with the maritime services. The RNR was a reserve of professional seamen from the Merchant Navy and fishing fleets.
horatio2 Posted 22 May , 2014 Posted 22 May , 2014 Men of the RFR were not all pensioners, only those with an 'A' prefix to their RFR number.
