Hello all

i have just brought a VM awarded to a driver from India, and his unit is stated as M.G.Cps

Did the Indian have their own MGC or was it part of the British MGC?

regards and thanks

Hello Caz

The Indian Army didn't have a separate MGC. Machine gun units with Indian divisions were part of the British MGC.

All three branches of the MGC (Cavalry, Infantry and Motors) in India had substantial numbers of Indian ORs on their establishment. For example, on 7 May 1919, 24th Squadron MGC (Cavalry) mustered 7 British officers, an Indian officer, 124 BORs, 61 IORS, and 65 followers. 263 Company, MGC Infantry mustered 5 BOs, 110 BORs and 40 IORs on 7 May 1919. Indian other ranks, mostly drivers, were on the establishment of many of the armoured car batteries in India.

Indian other ranks were also part of the establishment of MG Companies in the Indian Divisions in Palestine and Mesopotamia, though again mostly as drivers.
