tjp28blue Posted 21 May , 2014 Posted 21 May , 2014 Hello, I am trying to trace any information on a soldier in the Royal West Surreys, but unfortunately I only have his service number and not his battalion. He is Lance Corporal John William Grice G/15126. At some point he transferred to the Corps of Military Police (Foot Branch) and moved to Egypt. There he died (heart disease) in 1918. Grateful for any information relating to his enlistment and service in RWS. Many thanks and regards, TJP
BFBSM Posted 23 May , 2014 Posted 23 May , 2014 TJP, You may already have this, from Leicestershire and Rutland, Soldiers Died 1914-1920, on FMP: First name John W Last name Grice Unit Or Regiment Corps. Of Military Foot Police Rank Lance Corporal When Enlisted Petworth, Sussex Former Unit QUEEN'S ROYAL WEST SURREY REGT. Year Of Birth - Where / When Born Barkby, Leics Age 33 House No. 55 Address Line 1 Hardy Road Location - CityTown Wimbledon CountyState Surrey Country England Cause DIED Date Of Death 16-Aug-1918 Burial Commemeration Port Said War Mem. Cem., Egypt Notes PD. He was the son of Mr and Mrs John Grice of Barkby, Leics, and the husband of Mrs G. S. Grice. The 1911 Census places him as living and working at Coombe Cottage Gardens, Coombe Lane, Kingston-on-Thames, as a Gardener Foreman, and he was single at the time. He married his wife in 1913 in Leicestershire, her name Gertrude S Goode. I have looked in the Regimental History, did not find anything. I would suggest wither a visit or contacting the Surrey History Centre, who hold the Regimental records, to see if they can help. Mark
tjp28blue Posted 23 May , 2014 Author Posted 23 May , 2014 Mark, Many thanks for your interesting information some of which is new to me. I will certainly try the Surrey History Centre, at least I might get a battalion then I can start some further research into his life in the Surreys. Grateful to you. Regards, TJP
