Good morning

I am researching my family history, especailly the military side, and would please like some help off forum members on the whereabouts of the 51st (Siege) Battery RGA in France 1917.

My mothers great uncle 278436 Gnr Law Gregory was wounded in action on/around (difficult to read on his service record) 6 June 1917, i have his MIC service records and SWB list. But i am pretty much stumped on where the battery actually served and as part of what division etc.

From scouring the net looking for any info on the battery, i have found many memorials to individuals who were killed with the battery, and many around June 1917.

I read somewhere that the war diary for June 1917 was not with the unit war diaries at the National Archives. Do any forum members know where the battery served? Who with and what actions they were involved in?

From pretty much starting my reserach on my familes military history i have un eartherd a mountain of information and records, both from this site and ancestry etc. After writing to Glasgow i have paid my £30 and recieved my Grandfathers full service records of 1916 - 24 and subsequent service with the TA from 1924-41, which surprisingly only took 7 weeks to recieve, the service was great.

As a serving WO2 it amazes me of the standard of record keeping with the Great War service records, seeing as in my training wing a Sgt couldnt even tell me last week who turned up to conduct training on the Tusday!!

Liam,

you are correct in that the official WD for June is missing, the higher formations they came under at the time are available though and were 17 HAG (Heavy Arty Group) and 2 ANZAC Corps, when they supported the attack on the Messines Ridge whilst positioned near Oosthove Farm . 17 HAG WD is available at Kew under Ref WO95/388 and 2 ANZAC is freely available as a large PDF to download on the Australian Archives site. Its also worth you searching this forum for previous posts on the battery in the search box top right.
