Hallaton1 Posted 20 May , 2014 Posted 20 May , 2014 Hello I wonder if some Coldstream expert on here might be able to help me. I'm researching Allan Huggard (5829) who was KIA on 25th October 1914. I have the official war diary which states they were engaged in action at Langemarck but unfortunately the detailed orders etc were lost a few days later. Are there any more detailed descriptions of what happened in those few days? Would it be worth consulting other battalion diaries or was only the Cooldstream Guards involved? Excuse my ignorance here. The day he was KIA they seem to have been relieved at 7am so it looks like he most likely was killed by shellfire?? His Guards' records confirm he was living in Wakefield at the outbreak of war but I have not been able to establish if he is listed on any of their war memorials. Thanks Max
mebu Posted 20 May , 2014 Posted 20 May , 2014 Would suggest looking at other battalions in the brigade, also the brigade diary itself often gives info, as does the divisional diary, one of which may have copies of the lost orders. Peter
madgarry Posted 20 May , 2014 Posted 20 May , 2014 If you look for forum member coldstreamer, he is a coldstream guards expert
Coldstreamer Posted 20 May , 2014 Posted 20 May , 2014 I cant see his name on the roll written by the regiment as casualties occurred during the war - this suggests that he was missing in action presumed killed Cant see any detailed orders for that day sorry
Colin W Taylor Posted 21 May , 2014 Posted 21 May , 2014 Max As you suggest the war diary does not mention much in terms of casualties on the 25th and I would suggest that he was reported missing on this date having been killed in the previous days but that his being missing was only recorded on the 25th. I have in my possession copies of pages from the diary of Captain Warde Adlam which covers in some detail up until the 26th when he was wounded. I can send you the pages as background information though he seldom mentions anyone but officer casualties during this time. If this is of interest please send me a message with your email address. Kind regards Colin
tullybrone Posted 22 May , 2014 Posted 22 May , 2014 Off topic but.....the son of Capt Warde Aldam was taken POW with my father in 3rd CG in Libya December 1941. Steve Y
Colin W Taylor Posted 22 May , 2014 Posted 22 May , 2014 Steve That doesn't surprise me one bit - one starts to notice family dynasties in some of the guards regiments. Sadly some dynasties were somewhat cut short during the war. Kind regards Colin

Kind regards Colin Colin Thanks. I have sent you a PM. I suspect you are correct about Huggard's death as they left the trenches at 7am. That as well as the information supplied above by Coldstreamer would indicate to me the likelihood was that he was killed but reported missing once they were relieved. His body was never found which also supports this idea. Many thanks Max Also as usual many thanks for all the replies.
