Just spotted several plaques listed today with US $15.00 bid starters. I checked out a couple of names and found nothing on the CWGC site. One was Indian (Ali Haider), the other western (Matthew Keats).

Is it common for this to occur?

I've had a quick look and I'm not keen on the Haider plaque... looks a little too worn. I say this because all the Indian plaques I've seen are usually very crisp in detail.

The seller also has "Death Medal + 2 small medals" - opening bid (aren't any yet!) = $15.

The Haider plaque ----> Haider

I've looked for the "Keats" info on CWGC, including a possible spelling of "Keates" - nothing.

Les.

ps.... I have no person interest in this seller or his goods (only if he was selling to "Turner " or "Coole" :P )

Matthew Keats also doesn't come up on the on-line MICs.

Does this mean they are not as they might be?

No. It just means that they were probably not British Army. Quite a few plaques are named to people not on the CWGC lists. Of the ones I've had, they've mainly turned out to be Merc.Marine. It's a possibility that both of these are Merc Marine, and don't forget that Ali Haider isn't necessarily Indian. He sounds more Egyptian or something to me.

There are eight Ali Haidar's and no Ali Haider's when I searched the CWGC site. I would suggest not very researchable even if one bought it.

As Jim points out there are several Ali Haidar casualties to whom this plaque could belong. The variation of spelling is not unusual at all with Indian names.

As RT will tell you, plaques continued to be issued after the CWGC cut off date and therefore some names may not feature in CWGC's database.

Mercantile Marine casualties appear in CWGC's list if they died of war causes as they are entitled to war grave status. Likewise, Egyptian personnel also appear as they are counted as United Kingdom casualties - Egypt being a UK administered territory at the time.

I know. What I was saying is that most of the plaques that I've owned ,where there are no details on CWGC, tend to be Merc. Marine casualties.
