fmather Posted 16 October , 2004 Posted 16 October , 2004 We have numerous accounts of allied airmen who , having been shot down, were buried with full military honours by the Germans. Did this happen the other way round? Fiona
Ralph J. Whitehead Posted 16 October , 2004 Posted 16 October , 2004 From what I have read, yes. The Germans also provided burial services for not only airmen but I have accounts for infantry officers as well as one account of a formal funeral for a private who was seriously wounded during a trench raid and died after being brought to the German lines. Bob Coulson Posted 16 October , 2004 Posted 16 October , 2004 In August 1917 two Gothas were brought down near Margate. 18th Yorkshires were called on to furnish a firing party at the funeral of the German airmen. Bob.
Tom Morgan Posted 16 October , 2004 Posted 16 October , 2004 Harry, you can still pay your respects to the crew of the L32 without having to get your feet wet crossing to Europe as they are all buried in one grave in Staffordshire, at the Cannock Chase German Cemetery. This cemetery was opened in the 1960s for the concentration of burials of all German servicemen of both world wars, who died in the UK. There are 2143 Great War and 2786 Second World War burials. The crews of SL11, L31 and L48 are also buried there. Tom
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 16 October , 2004 Posted 16 October , 2004 Thanks for that!I must return one day!
