Pte. Alfred Carter MM

Recommended Posts

Good day all,

I'm trying to help a local lady with information on a relation,

27961 Pte. Alfred Carter MM 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.

The military medal was gazetted on the 12th December 1917 and Alfred was killed in action on the 22nd March 1918, I'm assuming during the Spring Offensive?

So, if anybody can help with how the MM was won and the actions on the 22nd March it would be greatly appreciated.

Three months after the action for normal Gazetting,so likely to be at one of the Third Ypres battles,Menin Road/Polygon Wood ? 57 Brigade of 19 Division. War Diary is digital and downloadable:

and there may be a citation there.

22 March 1918 was the middle day of the Battle of St Quentin, one of the series of Somme 1918.which also included 19 Division.

Morning Llew,

Have sent the RH to you, let me know if you do not get it.

Carter is mentioned in Stacke's RH but only in the details you have above,

Carter's picture is in the Berrow's Worcester Journal held at the Worcester Records Office - they're good at getting reproductions done!!

10th Nov 1917 Pte. A. Carter, Bretforton. Military Medal. Carter, A.

Given his picture is in the 10/11/17 issue, that narrows the date of his MM action down a little further!

Best, Simon
