Allocation of RGA Uniforms

Can anybody confirm when soldiers were 1st kitted out with their uniforms? In the case of the RGA was it when they were mobilised and reported to their depots, or was it sometime after they had volunteered and were awaiting a posting. I have an ancestor in the RGA 177th Heavy Battery who would have been mobilised around July/August 1916 at Fort Burgoyne, but there is a picture of him in his uniform that somebody had written Castle Dover 1915 on the reverse. Thank you Ian

Reservists still serving out their reserve annual reporting obligation (ClassA) usually retained one uniform at home and so wore it when they reported on mobilisation. Reservists who had completed their annual reporting obligation period (ClassB), and new recruits who had never served before were generally kitted out at the mobilisation depot to which they reported.

Ian,

The majority would, as Frogsmile says, have received their uniform at their first depot. Slightly different in the first few months of the war. Have a read of http://www.archive.org/stream/makingofgunner00streiala/makingofgunner00streiala_djvu.txt , it will answer a lot of questions you may have about a wide range of RGA matters.

Kevin

That's a very interesting and well written link Kevin. Useful when trying to understand the mobilization process, as you have suggested.
