SMG65 Posted 14 October , 2004 Posted 14 October , 2004 I have a postcard which was sent by a relative during the war. Frustratingly it is difficult to read, but I am working on that problem. The card was franked 24 September (year not known) at Norwich and has a halfpenny stamp Can anyone enlighten me about what was going on around Norwich in the Great War, was their a camp? And does anyone know anyone who has a knowledge of Great War postcards as this may give a clue to its year. The postcard is a drawing of a table with bread, margarine, a knife and butter beans on it, with a plate of what looks like potatoes on it. The verse says' A 4lb Loaf of War Time Bread, (Eat half a pound a day), Some Margarine, and Butter Beans. A'int Bad Grub anyway! The postcard was issued by W & K. London E. C. Series No 4279. British Manufacture.
John_Hartley Posted 5 August , 2013 Posted 5 August , 2013 So, I'd Googled on "Some margarine and butter beans" and this thread was the only hit. Reason for Googling was that I'd come across a reproduction of the postcard in a local history publication. That dates it to 1917.
