Jacob Posted 14 October , 2004 Posted 14 October , 2004 I have a question about the CWGA. I found Gunner William HALE's name on the CWGA site and it says he is buried in the Churchyard in Cinderford, Glocestershire, England. I have had people look for his grave but didn't find it. Should he have a CWGA headstone? Thanks. Bill White
KONDOA Posted 14 October , 2004 Posted 14 October , 2004 Always worth checking if the village has two graveyards, one near the church and an overflow one elsewhere. I have had this problem before.
Bob Coulson Posted 14 October , 2004 Posted 14 October , 2004 Bill, He may or may not have a CWGC headstone, it was down to the family's wishes. Bob.
Terry Denham Posted 14 October , 2004 Posted 14 October , 2004 Jacob When a casualty died in their home country the relatives were allowed to select a private headstone if they so wished. About 18% did so in the UK. Therefore you could be looking for a normal private headstone or memorial. Nowadays, these can have fallen into disrepair or be partially buried. These private headstone war graves can be very difficult to find sometimes.
Jacob Posted 14 October , 2004 Author Posted 14 October , 2004 Thanks to everyone who helped me with my CWGC query. It helped a lot. Bill White
