anniesaunders Posted 24 September , 2018 Share Posted 24 September , 2018 Hello Coldstreamer My Great Grandad William Sambrookes was in the 4th Battalion Pioneers. I am tracking where he served and trying to find out about 1916 service. Was the battalion at the Somme? His number was 14249 and he was a Lance Corporal by end of his service. He served from December 1914, was in NW France in September 1915 (Loos?) and then I have a gap until he got sick and was sent back to Britain in December 1916 Can you help me fill in the gap? Thank you very much Annie Saunders
clk Posted 24 September , 2018 Share Posted 24 September , 2018 Hi Annie, Using the dates of his overseas service (papers on Findmypast are here) you can look in the Battalion war diary (the National Archives here, or Ancestry here) to get a brief flavour of where he likely was, and the events that he was probably involved in. The Guards Division HQ (General Staff) diary (National Archives here, Ancestry here) would give more context to the Battalion diary.
