Varley Richard A.V.C

Seeking information on Pte Richard Varley, A.V.C. who was permanently classed as war disabled due to being gassed in 1916. Only bit of information I have is as follows:- Kindest Regards DaveC

L/Cpl Thomas Varley

Official intimation is to hand that L Cpl Thos. Varley, aged 19, of the West Riding Regt. (2059) of 18, Brunswick Square, Haley Hill is posted as missing from Sept 3rd, was formerly employed at Ramsden’s Brewery, and enlisted Aug 1914. He went to France about 18 months ago. His father Pte. R. Varley A.V.C. was invalided to England last Sunday, and is now in hospital in Glasgow.

Private SE/15912, Army Veterinary Corps

enlisted 5/4/16, discharged 1/6/18 as sick and aged 44 years.

1911 Census - No. 1, Pump Street, Haly Hill, Halifax, Yorks.

Richard Varley head 37 cart driver born Yorks, Liversidge

Emma Varley wife 36 married 16 years 6 children 4 living born Yorks., Lownmoor?

Thomas Varley son 13 school part time doffer worsted spinning mill born Yorks, Liversidge

John Henry Varley son 10 born Yorks., Halifax

Arthur Varley son 5 born Yorks., Halifax

Annie Varley dau. born Yorks., Halifax

This would appear to be the Richard and Thomas Varley, father and son, referred to in the Halifax Evening Courier report. Age for Richard also fits with Silver War Badge roll quoted by Graeme.

a Richard Varley, born about 1874, died Halifax District 1942 quarter 1.
