johnboy Posted 24 April , 2014 Share Posted 24 April , 2014 A lot of OR's mentioned by name makes a change.
Gardenerbill Posted 25 April , 2014 Author Share Posted 25 April , 2014 Yes, the normal pattern for war diaries I believe is mostly officers named with referneces to other ranks as OR's with an occsasional name being exceptional. The 801st war diary followed this pattern and the list of names above in chronological order reflects this at the start. Then towards the end of 1918 a lot of other ranks start to get mentioned, particularly around the time of the influenza outbreak, I wonder if it was deliberate to record exactly who was in hospital or sick to show how under strength the unit had become. johnboy Posted 25 April , 2014 Share Posted 25 April , 2014 Without going back through your postings, how many men were in the unit? There seemed to be a bit of friction between the diary writer and other MT units so you could well be right about showing the strength of the unit, But I have seen other WD's that just have ' officers killed, Officers wounded, OR's killed, OR's wounded a figure for those missing and Total strength figure. But these have been Infantry btns in France & Flanders.
Gardenerbill Posted 25 April , 2014 Author Share Posted 25 April , 2014 From memory it started with 59 men and 6 NCO's plus officers (numbers not recorded but probably only 5 or 6)), I am going to try and work out the comings and goings but this might take some time. johnboy Posted 25 April , 2014 Share Posted 25 April , 2014 With a small unit it is probable the diary writer knew every man, unlike an infantry regiment of aprox 1000 men.
Gardenerbill Posted 27 April , 2014 Author Share Posted 27 April , 2014 Just checked the diary again and when the company was formed there were only 2 NCOs and 59 men. According to Michael Young's ASC book an A.S.C. M.T. Company normally consists of 5 officers 1 warrant officer 3 sergeants 12 artificers and 60 rank and file, so the unit started significantly under strength. I think you are right though Johnboy the officer writing the diary would have known all the men, especially towards the end when they had been together for nearly 3 years. johnboy Posted 27 April , 2014 Share Posted 27 April , 2014 It's nice to think so Mark. No wonder the writer moaned about losing men for days here and there and being let down by other units.
