Another Daily Telegraph story telling how Eric Cecil Gordon England buzzed the Kaiser on board his yacht SMY Hohenzollern II shortly before the outbreak of war during the re-opening of the Kiel canal after widening on 24th June 1914 Click. Before, during and after the war Gordon was involved in aircraft design and consultancy before, in later years, getting involved in motorsport. (a brief biography can be found in Wikipedia, and numerous mentions can be found of him in the 'Flight' archive)

A previously unpublished, first-hand account of the event by England himself appears in the latest issue (No 7) of that excellent quarterly, 'The Aviation Historian'.

The serialisation in Aviation Historian, does get mentioned in the final paragraphs of the Telegraph's article, and this comment from its editor, Mick Oakey, is also given:

“It is a wonderful and light hearted tale. The aircraft must have had to buzz the Kaiser at quite a low altitude, because they then had to climb to fly over the Zeppelin. The area had the equivalent of an air exclusion zone, so it must have caused quite a stir.”

"The serialisation in Aviation Historian"

Note that the item on England in TAH7 is a complete article. The other articles in the 'serialisation' are individual first hand accounts by other early pioneer aviators.
