neala Posted 21 April , 2014 Share Posted 21 April , 2014 Hey all, I found this photo / post card in an antique shop. I think it is most certainly WW1. ? was taken at a field hospital. Are some of them in hospital blues? Appears to be some injured. Some also with different cap badges. Also some ? Australian/New Zealand troops with their wide brimmed hats. Also not sure significance of small boy in what appears to be a navel outfit and a lady present..?? Nurse/VAD. Any thoughts..? Cheers, Neal. johnboy Posted 21 April , 2014 Share Posted 21 April , 2014 Yes . look like Hospital Blues. Not sure the term ' field hospital' is correct. It is not a dressing station. Don't think it is a Casualty Clearing Station . Most likely a hospital in UK? The lady and boy are possibly visiting husband/father.
neala Posted 21 April , 2014 Author Share Posted 21 April , 2014 Thanks for this. Yep could be a dressing station... Taken in France by the way. No date or other info on card.
johnboy Posted 21 April , 2014 Share Posted 21 April , 2014 I am not sure dressing stations used hospital blues.
neala Posted 21 April , 2014 Author Share Posted 21 April , 2014 Hospital then! hahaha. Theres no details on card. All I can say is it was taken somewhere in France!! Thought they were wearing hospital blues though. Thanks for confirming that. What do you reckon about the broad hatted chaps....? Australians...? johnboy Posted 21 April , 2014 Share Posted 21 April , 2014 I am still not sure that they were used in France though if your card was produced in France then they may have been, I have asked the question in another forum where the experts may know the answer,! jacksdad Posted 22 April , 2014 Share Posted 22 April , 2014 There's not much to go on in the photo. but you have a fair mix of units, and a reasonable number of Anzac soldiers going by the hats. lemon squeezers - NZ and slouch hats Australians. They seem to be on a bank, behind a fence, and appear to be formed up in a way to suggest that they are viewing something, behind the camera. The person taking the photo is in front of the fence and this appears to be a free area with no one standing on this side of the fence. So I immediately wonder if this is a race course. That makes me think of Rouen - 1st Australian Stationary Hospital, If memory is correct this was in the middle of the race course. http://throughtheselines.com.au/research/rouen I am no expert, but I understood that the blue hospital uniform was generally only used at stationary hospitals. johnboy Posted 22 April , 2014 Share Posted 22 April , 2014 Is it a photo or a postcard? Anything on the reverse.
neala Posted 22 April , 2014 Author Share Posted 22 April , 2014 Looks like it was a personal photo printed onto a postcard - like they did. Taken in France. No details regarding photographer ie stamp in corner and no date/place/names or anything documented.
Sue Light Posted 22 April , 2014 Share Posted 22 April , 2014 You'll find a remarkably similar photo on this page - no reason to think it's the same place, but an example of how it could have been taken anywhere in France, but likely to be a General Hospital of which there were scores. No.3 General Hospital, Le Treport Sue
