cherylg Posted 13 October , 2004 Posted 13 October , 2004 Hi Could anybody please help me? I have been looking for information for 2 years on my Great Uncle. Here is the information i have: Ellis Spencer He was a Gunner in the 5th Divisional Australian Trench Mortar Battery He died on 05/09/1917 His service number was :26246 He is listed at Lijssenthoek Military Cementary He was born in Cheshire in 1881 he was still in Cheshire in 1891 but then he disappears. The family think he emigrated to Australia sometime before 1901. He must have enlisted in the Australian Army hence the fact on CWCG he is listed as an Australian. There is a book being written about War Dead from the Crewe & Nantwich Area in Cheshire and the family would really like to have Ellis comemorated in it. Please can anybody help????? Regards Cheryl

cherylg Posted 13 October , 2004 Author Posted 13 October , 2004 Hi Stephen Thank you for the info, do you know if I can get a copy of his service records anywhere? Regards Cheryl
Jonathan Saunders Posted 13 October , 2004 Posted 13 October , 2004 Cheryl, The Australian records/site is excellent. Regret I cant find the link I use dto have but try putting Australian archives centre in a search engine and I am sure you will find it. You used to be able to request them to scan a copy and put on line - waiting period was about 3/4 mths - or you can email them and request a copy of the service record and they sent my request in about a month - I paid after receipt. Any problems finding the site and let me know - I will dig around.

John_Hartley Posted 13 October , 2004 Posted 13 October , 2004 Cheryl The name Ellis Spencer rings a bell with me. Have you asked this question before, by any chance? There's an Ellis Spencer on the memorial in Acton, Cheshire which I assume will be him. You'll find a photo, etc at carlscam.com. John
cherylg Posted 26 October , 2004 Author Posted 26 October , 2004 Hi John Sorry I've only just replied. Yes have been asking for info about my Great Uncle Ellis Spencer before. But still no luck. Did find him on the War memorial at Acton, but a local historian wanted him verified for a book he is writing, which I've now done, he also asked me any other information which i'm struggling with. Still trying to find out how somebody born in Cheshire ends up serving in the Australian Army and is listed as Austrailan on the CWGC site. I'm determined to find out but its getting to be a bigger task than I first thought. Regards Cheryl
