Old Contemptibles

Hello,

I'm trying to research the life of my great grandfather Edward Webb who served in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays) from 1911 to 1918. He survived the war and settled in Aldershot. I'm trying to find out if he was a member of the Aldershot branch of the Old Contemptibles association. Can anyone help? Thanks

If he had the 1914 Star, then he'd be eligible for the Old Contemptibles Association.

His Medal Index Card will show whether he was entitled or not

As to which branch, well, I have no idea.

Some men just wanted to avoid being reminded of the War and although eligible didn't participate, or did so only very much later.

Perhaps the Aldershot RBL might have better information about an OCA Branch?

Major-General. Thanks very much. I hadn't thought of the RBL. He did have the 1914 star with clasp. He arrived in France on 16 August 1914. You could be right about not wanting to be reminded, that makes sense. He became the manager of the church of England soldiers institute in Aldershot after he left the army so he was still involved. He received an MBE for his welfare work later in his life. Thanks again for the reply

Captain, Thanks. I have his medal roll index card. While we're on the subject I don't suppose you know what the D/ means before his official number? Thanks for the reply
