I've just purchased a Memorial Plaque to Benjamin James Lewis. On the C.W.G.C. site there are three with the name Benjamin James Lewis. The plaque came with the white envelope with number 803833. Can any member tell me from the number which one of the three casualties that I've got ?. I've asked this question on another site,as yet I'm none the wiser. Thank you. Lyn.

803833 seems to have only one unit as it was allocated to 30 Battalion London regiment in the 1917 re-numbering,according to the LLT,but there is no casualty linked to it from either SDGW or CWGC as far as I can see. There is also a Canadian number 811138 for a B Lewis on CWGC.

I ssem to have found only one with his full name

Benjamin James Lewis No G/8771

2nd Middlesex Regiment from Homerton

Maybe the number in the envelope was from a register of those issued?

Was the evelope blank or was it addressed?.

The white envelope is what the Memorial Plaque came in. The white envelope is then coverd by the brown cardboard. There is nothing but a crest on the flap of the envelope and the number in pencil. Lyn.

The envelope number unfortunately bears no resemblence to service numbers.

I don't think the issue number records for plaques survived?

'tis the pain of us plaque collectors.

Ian

I purchased the plaque in Carmarthem South Wales. One of the casualties is from that town. 50th. Batt. Canadian Regiment. Thank you all for your help. Lyn.
