I am trying to identify the man in uniform in this photo as possibly someone who lived locally and was in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. Can anyone tell the regiment by looking at the uniform? The soldier we are researching was called William Darvill from Hazelhurst Road in Tooting, south London. He was killed on 6th October 1918 aged 23.

Many thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Is it the man in the middle rear you're referring to? Can you take a scan and enlarge and isolate his Glengarry? If you can't, get a magnifying glass and see if you can get a better look, being from London, the other option would be London Scottish, below are both badges, they are similar, but the tell tale is the crown surmounted by the lion that makes it distinctive.

Geoff,

With a diced glengarry, the man in the center could well be KOSB. Other possibilities are Royal Scots and Royal Scots Fusiliers (less likely because of badge shape) unless he is hiding a kilt behind the other fellows. As Sam has suggested, an enlargement of the glengarry would help. The London Scottish wore a solid blue glengarry.

Silly me Mike, you are of course correct.

With a blue tourie (not that it would show, but pedantry is all!).

Why the change of your avatar? What happened to Richard Wattis?
