Remembered Today:

Poperinge Airfield

A question that arises from a previous thread on 29 Squadron RFC. Does anyone know the exact location of their airfield at Poperinge? It was obviously separate from Abele and Proven. I have seen one reference to it as 'Poperinge Kerkhof'. Unfortunately I don't have the 'Battleground Europe' book which covers airfields in the Ypres area.

It was a couple of miles to the NW of Pop. town centre. At a place called Hamhoek (or something similar).

Mark,

If it's of any help, you can find it on the 1:10,000 scale "trenchmap" 27NE2 - Proven (towards the bottom RH corner - that was descriptive wasn't it ! :D ).

Mark,

I might be mistaken but I am nearly sure that the location of the airfield is off the road you travel on from Pops to Dozinghem Cem (in the direction of Krombeke).

It is. (With La Lovie aerodrome further up the same road).

Here's the area in 1918 (La Lovie field, with hangars, is at the top of the map).

During ww1 Poperinge had several airfields :

- Abeele airfield

- Poperinghe aerodrome

- 't Hooghe airfield

- La Lovie airfield

- Drogland airfield

Nowadays, it's all gone. Nothing remains.
