Mark Hone Posted 12 October , 2004 Share Posted 12 October , 2004 A question that arises from a previous thread on 29 Squadron RFC. Does anyone know the exact location of their airfield at Poperinge? It was obviously separate from Abele and Proven. I have seen one reference to it as 'Poperinge Kerkhof'. Unfortunately I don't have the 'Battleground Europe' book which covers airfields in the Ypres area.
CROONAERT Posted 12 October , 2004 Share Posted 12 October , 2004 It was a couple of miles to the NW of Pop. town centre. At a place called Hamhoek (or something similar). Dave.
Mark Hone Posted 13 October , 2004 Author Share Posted 13 October , 2004 Thanks, Dave, I shall consult my detailed maps of the area.
CROONAERT Posted 13 October , 2004 Share Posted 13 October , 2004 Mark, If it's of any help, you can find it on the 1:10,000 scale "trenchmap" 27NE2 - Proven (towards the bottom RH corner - that was descriptive wasn't it ! ). Dave.
iain mchenry Posted 13 October , 2004 Share Posted 13 October , 2004 Mark, I might be mistaken but I am nearly sure that the location of the airfield is off the road you travel on from Pops to Dozinghem Cem (in the direction of Krombeke). Iain It is. (With La Lovie aerodrome further up the same road). Here's the area in 1918 (La Lovie field, with hangars, is at the top of the map). Dave. Mark Hone Posted 14 October , 2004 Author Share Posted 14 October , 2004 Fantastic-I shall have a look for it the next time I'm in that area-probably on a bike!
zijde26 Posted 17 October , 2004 Share Posted 17 October , 2004 During ww1 Poperinge had several airfields : - Abeele airfield - Poperinghe aerodrome - 't Hooghe airfield - La Lovie airfield - Drogland airfield Nowadays, it's all gone. Nothing remains. Gilbert Deraedt
