Invested by the Germans during the First World War in 1915, the cave was taken over in 1917 by the French, who then lived alongside the Germans. Archival images of the 14-18 war and the testimonies of former soldiers recall the history of this strategic location. A man recalls the story of the Way of the ladies. A veteran (in uniform and medals) evokes the Nivelle offensive of 1917. Beautiful aerial views of the Champagne barely healed, sliced red area near Reims, Fort Pompelle. A plaque commemorating the village existed before 1914 Vauquois, as confirmed by Mr. PLATZ and engravings of the time. IRC Kevin Posted 1 April , 2014 Share Posted 1 April , 2014 Many thanks for that link- that really brought some memories back of some fifty years ago, before both became museums and restricted access. As a child I spent many a fascinating hour exploring both the Grottes du Dragon and Pompelle underground, with our only illumination being a couple of battery powered torches.
