Hello `Newby'. Great work you (& others ??) are doing re commemorating those on local Memorial.

STANDFORD Harry ???? I have STANFORD Harry ???? D/K 9865 - makes him Devonport rating.

Find below Submarine Record Card as I have.

STANFORD HARRY ALBERT STO 1 D/K 9865 NE RN SM E.20

05.11.15 Z 24 180791 C F

PLYMOUTH 7 PLYMOUTH 2 - 116

Killed in action with submarine in the Dardanelles.HMS ADAMANT.

ADM 188 / 886. NP 6054 / 15.P.o.B ; Darleston, Staffs. Occ ; Iron Worker.

H.M. Submarine E.20 was torpedoed and sunk in the Sea of Marmora, Turkey by U-14.

HMS Vivid II….180111 – 120511.

HMS Argyle….130511 – 020614.

HMS Forth….030614 – 200614.

HMS Dolphin….010714 – 051114.

HMS Maidstone….061114 – 200715.

HMS E20….210715 – 051115.

E 20 was a submarine, built by Vickers at Barrow she was commissioned on 30th August 1915.

Sunk on the 5th November the same year as the result of a tragic mistake on the part of a French Captain. The French submarine Turquoise was captured by the Turks in the Sea of Marmara with a complete set of allied codes intact, including the date, place and time of a meeting with HMS E20. Instead of the French sub turning up the German UB 14 arrived and torpedoed HMS E20. Of her crew of 30 21 were killed.

Full confirmation of name may be had by checking PRO/NA file No. ADM 188 / 886 - at least that is what the RN have his name as - families sometimes differ ?? PRO & `Register of Names' will confirm !!

Also note difference to your site in date of sinking of E.20 November not December 1915.

Thank you for the reply and correction, it is just 'yours truly' building the site which may account for the schoolboy errors on there. Graeme Clarke can attest to that.

The name does seem to be Stanford from checking other sources and what Ihave been told but it is Standford on the Memorial. I understand that it was pointed out at the unveiling in 1927 but as the names are on large bronze plaques there was not a lot that could be done about it.

Again thank you.

Off topic a little, in the 1911 census his younger brother, Richard Charles Stanford is, Boy 1st Class, HMS Victorious, Torquay. Was this the 1895 Battleship or was there some establishment at Torquay?

Or does this need to be placed elsewhere?

I have sent you a message with my e-mail address again as I don't seem to have received anything. Will then happily send you anything I have on Percival Hall Rodgers.

Hope to hear soon.

Thanks to Sadsac for the details of Percival Hall Rodgers service. I think I do know all of that but I am always grateful for any confirmation of what I think I know. I have a copy of his service record from the National Archives which I think would be ADM 188/871 as you quote. He married in 1909 before the war and had a daughter in 1913 and, although he didn't know it had 10 grandchildren so the lineage continues!

Hi all particularly Sonic Sniper

I have just come across this forum and I hope as a complete novice I can add value to the E20 research for others as well as adding greatly to my own family research.

My grandfather Signalman Henry Wilkinson Brown was killed when E20 went down. Fortunately his wife was carrying his unborn son at that time so today he has 29 direct descendants, of which I am one.

I have Henry's original record of service and this has allowed me to follow his postings from a Ganges boy sailor to E20 plus fill in some bits on E20's short life from launch to sinking. I presume ( Sonic Sniper) that you will probably have most of this. Also I have a photo of HWB, E20 at Barrow in Furnace plus two In Grand Harbour Malta. I have done a story of his life and service for work being done about individuals on our local memorials . He is remembered on two of them.

I am happy to share anything I have to add to the E20 story plus HWB's background. Internet research lists those who survived but I have nothing on the survivors or what happened to them.

Just a thought for contemplation for those of you that have contributed to this site.

Tomorrow will be exactly 100yrs since E20 was sunk.

I will be visiting my local memorial with a small group to remember my grandfather and the whole crew of the E20.

Hello,

My name is Ilona, I'm a school teacher. I would to share some information with you all that I came across yesterday. I'm currently on holiday and came across an old log book that belonged to Lt Cdr C.H. Warren dating from 1903-1904. He was on a few ships during this period - HMS Albion, HMS Fearless and HMS Cressy. He may have been on others, I didn't have the time to look and read through all the pages. The log book was meticulously kept with superb water colour paintings, line drawings of equipments and maps around 'Nippon' which I believe is Japan. The log book shows daily logs of what was happening, weather conditions, installations of equipment. Also included are beautiful contoured line drawings mapping the seabed around this region.

This is the first time I have come across a book that fascinated me, i had no idea who this person was or what he did. I went back to my room in the evening and started researching. Well, by 3:00am in the morning, I discovered so much more. I just knew in my heart that after I read and looked at Lt Cdr C.H Warren's work, that here is a man who was extremely talented, intelligent, caring and meticulous for detail.

I hope this helps, the log book definitely proves he was at this rank on these ships and at sea during 1903-1904.

Despite not knowing anything about this man, I feel he was a hero, an unsung hero. There should be a film made about him, especially the unfortunate incident with his submarine HMS E20. I would love to know more about him, was he married, children, etc.. Any photos of him and him on his ships and submarines. His interests, education, what did he do after retiring from service, when did he passed away, etc... So many questions. I'm so excited and intrigued by my stumbling across the log book and consequent research.

If anyone could help with the above I would be very grateful. Im also happy to give further help to any queries too.

Many thanks &

Kind regards,

Ilona
