Remembered Today:

A beautiful day on the Salient

On popular demand... I have scanned the overlay of the walks around the Messines and Ploegsteert sector. Both are approximately 30 km long.

This is not high quality of course, but it gives you an idea. If you want the overlay, just send me a PM with your e-mail adress and I'll send the PDF. Just print it on a plastic overlay A4 size, put in on a map 1/50.000, respecting the quadrangles and you have your walk.

Just hoping i will have time to have a look around after I have got back from the guided tours! not sure if to stick with them or go it alone hmmmmmm

Rach

Actually, Rachel ... our quite crazy bunch decided to do this, on the 15th: http://nvv.be/en/content/through-flanders-fields

... so when you're around in Ypres that day, you might see us limp in, on the 16th ... please take a plastic bag to gather the pieces... :w00t:

Wow, that looks so fun. Is there a great war connection every year or is this year special?

It's the first this year, especially for the 100 years, by the organisators of "de nacht van vlaanderen", which is another 100Km. (We Belgians are a bit crazy about walking...)

So yes, Rachel, we will be walking at night. Leave Torhout at 20.00 on the Friday and then by the time the sun goes up again we'll still have half to do in the sunlight, considering a pace of 5 km/hr.

Ken, you're welcome to join !!!

If 100km is too much you can also go for a 50 ... or come to the Yzer ... or to the 100km of Ypres.

You don't have hills to hold you up :w00t:

Middle of Aug, so might be there. Well in Suzanne but I prefer outdoors to family get togethers.

Part 2 of the Messines - Plugstreet visit was planned for tomorrow, but the exam schedules dictates otherwise... I'm thinking it wiser to stay in and work, and postpone the walk to a day where I would truly enjoy it.

The wife and I would love to do this but a European journey is simply not in the cards for this year.

Hi all,

I went back to Messines and Plugstreet Tuesday evening... beautiful weather and I really needed some time off from Smurf School for a few hours... so what better company than my camera and just plain me, myself and I visiting some of the nicest places on the Salient??

Started back at Hyde Park Corner and visited the grave of Albert French, who died on week before his 17th birthday :

then to the other side of the road, Berks Cemetery Extension ...

post-84394-0-64002200-1404407415_thumb.j

and especially for Fattyowls, one of my rows:

And I do like a bit of apparent chaos...

and then moving on to the Messines Craters. First Kruisstraat:

And then the Pool of Peace :

note for the visitor: if you want access to Lone Tree Cemetery, bring cookies... or the guard won't let you through !!!

and then evening was falling and light getting tough to catch... but I got to Messines Ridge cemetery right on time for this little light effect :

And finally, what I believe to be my best picture of the day:

I completely agree with Glen; wonderful is the word. You clearly made the most of lovely light conditions. I will email you for some of the full sized versions; I tried to emulate your compositions when I was over two weeks ago with ok results but nowhere near as good. We are very lucky on the forum to have some terrific photographers.

It's been a while this thread has been updated, but this is the right opportunity...

Last Sunday marked a "joint" visit of two GWF pals, meeting for the first time in real, on Messines Ridge and Plug Street. Aim was to go see ALL the craters of the battle of Messines.

We did... but I also took some other pics of the area, that are WAY more interesting than some holes in the ground...

starting of course with Menin Gate ... and a coffee in Ypres before hitting the road:

and then to St Eloi

don't forget to get your access number for the gate at the tourist info in Ypres !!

I have the idea that resizing a picture has a very bad effect on the pics as they present themselves on the screen here...

pity ...

We could make some pictures of Hollandseschuur, but only for personal use... so won't publish them.

Petit Bois are nice also:

Of course the way to Factory Farm and the Birdcage went through Ploegsteert wood.

And believe it or not, I'd never found the time to visit the cemeteries in and around the woods... only time I passed them, I was running the half marathon on 11 November... without camera !!

Prowse Point:

post-84394-0-52829300-1428994783_thumb.j

another one:

post-84394-0-93352200-1428994829_thumb.j

Next to Prowse Point is this new memorial to the football matches and something that should represent two lines of trenches... bof!

Mud Corner seen from Prowse Point:

post-84394-0-38743200-1428994902_thumb.j

And finally, we visited the three cemeteries in the woods themselves...

absolutely lovely places, so calm and serene ...

post-84394-0-33808000-1428995015_thumb.j

A great conclusion to a wonderful day ...

But last lesson learned: I NEED A WIDE ANGLE !!!

Prowse Point, of course... the geography and layout of that cemetery is an exceptional treat for photographers!!

That's maybe because somebody closed it wrong. You really need a code if it's locked. But it's free of charge. Just tell them you're going and you get the day's code.
