Gunner Hugh Baxter - possible non-com?

I've found this service record for Gunner Hugh Baxter 24391 RFA:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=5538&indiv=try&db=britisharmy&h=83414

On the first page it says he died on 21 November 1918 at Ormskirk, further in the date is given as 21 October 1918, cause of death was pneumonia following influenza. Presumably news of his death was received some time later as there is a note (struck through) saying he was discharged on 14 December 1918. Elsewhere it says he was transfered to Class W on 26 April 1917, then recalled on 11 April 1918, then returned to civil employment (no date). Can't work out if this man was serving in the army at the time of his death or not! I'm guessing his death was due to the flu pandemic and therefore not service related?

Could someone else please take a look at this record and perhaps determine whether or not he would qualify for war grave status?

No-one? I've found the attached report on his funeral in the Ormskirk Advertiser, if it's any help.

Definitely does not qualify.

He had been discharged from the army and was a civilian when he died on pneumonia connected with influenza.

Thanks for looking John.

As I said above, I had a bit of trouble getting my head around the service record, but I got the impression that he was a Class W Reservist at the time of death - is that effectively the same as being a civilian in terms of war grave criteria?

Yes, it is , Paul. As I understand Class W, it's a man discharged because his civilian employment is deemed more important than his military service.
