Rum Ration

I have been flicking through Forgotten Voices Of The Great War and have read a soldiers account of the rum ration

He describes men being given it , into their open mouth by tablespoon. A bit like children being given cough syrup.

I can see that by doing it this way the men could not save it up for a beano but did it really happen?

Rum was I believe served neat in the army so probably as you say or served in Tea/Coffee.

In the Royal Navy ratings/ranks below Petty Officer/Sgt RM had their daily Rum Ration diluted.
