Bob Coulson Posted 25 April , 2003 Share Posted 25 April , 2003 Been looking into Green Howards VC's in 1914-1918 and wonder if some kind person can help with a query regarding the memorial to Donald Bell. Is the memorial on the site of "Bell's Redoubt."? Is this the spot where he fell or where he was originally buried.? Would be grateful if anyone can explain. Bob. Paul Reed Posted 25 April , 2003 Share Posted 25 April , 2003 Yes, it's on the site of Bells Redoubt which I understand is both close to where he was killed and certainly where he was originally buried before transfer to Gordon Dump in the 20s. Bob Coulson Posted 7 May , 2003 Author Share Posted 7 May , 2003 Visited the Green Howards museum in Richmond today to see all of the regiments VC's including Donald Bell, also on display was his bullet riddled helmet and last letter home. If anyone is in North Yorkshire, the museum is well worth a visit. Bob.
Chris Noble Posted 8 May , 2003 Share Posted 8 May , 2003 Recently, i can't remember when they opened a memorial to Donald Bell, in a shopping mall in Harrogate, just down the road from me. The school he taught at,in the locality of Starbeck, is still there, little has changed. If anyone wants a photo, no problem Chris.
