Remembered Today:

Wgr Frank Keogh - died in Miltary Hospital, not on CWGC

One word of combined encouragement and caution. In October 1917 an Agricultural Company was set up at Victoria Barracks (there was an advert to farmers in the Hull press) so he as a waggoner could have been part of this - that's the encouragement. But I believe some agricultural companies also used some civilians for specialised roles (tractor work, driving waggons etc) so if he was an ex soldier he could have been taken on in this capacity (which would explain farm labourer on the death cert.). As Beverly appears to only have had a civilian cottage hospital at the time it's possible that if he had been taken seriously ill in such circumstances he might have been admitted to the barracks hospital in an emergency. That's the note of caution. Not sure where you'd find it but it might be worth seeing if there are any records on that agricultural company.

I've only just had chance to catch up with the Forum now. Thank you all so very much. From my earlier posts you will see that I think Frank was an orphan, who probably first came to East Yorkshire as an inmate at the local reformatory, then stayed on in the area. With no family to receive his medals or ensure his death was commemorated it would be fantastic to get some official recognition in this centenary year.

John, I will e-mail Terry as the IFTCProject have more experience than me.

Once again, many thanks to you all

Would there have been any kind of inquest? Seems to me since no SWB either he was in fact in the army or was discharged as "Time expired" & out of the forces when he took ill & died.

I always wonder about the memorials, was there not paperwork surviving such as application for inclusion by the family or some sort of confirmation of eligibility to be listed? I realize the passage of time & another war makes this unlikely but worth asking of the local authority. You never know til you ask. Good luck.

 Update on Frank Keogh.

Terry was successful in getting Frank Keogh accepted by CWGC in 2015 and this year a headstone was erected in the old Beverley (St John's) graveyard:

Well done Steve.   I volunteer with the CWGC Eyes On, Hands On team.  St John's, Beverley is one of my sites. As well as monitoring and cleaning the headstones, I research the names that I care for.

Frank has puzzled me for some time, as little comes up about him.  Reading the threads, I see a some debate on age (not unusual!) - CWGC has him at 43... at one stage you had him at 36?  Don't suppose you've turned up anymore details you could help me with?

Just enquiring/commenting

  • MIC as CHT/654 [What does Medal Roll read? = Perhaps somebody can check/post please, @Allan1892 perhaps
  • CWGC as CHT/654
  • Special Memorial as CHT/645

Keogh.JPG.0bbd05c5b092b6e2f09c21efd65d4b42.JPG

Somebody at CWGC seems to have got things adrift [one way or another]

The LG prints under the heading "Soldiers and Airmens balances undisposed of" a "List of deceased Soldiers and Airmen who's Personal Estate is held for distribution amongst the Next-of-Kin or others entitled".

This https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31624/page/13260 from 31st October 1919 lists "Keogh. F., Dvr., R.A.S.C., £34. 7s. 11d.". The heading page is 13258.

That seems the 1st time of naming for distribution

This is the 6th https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/33097/page/7025 The heading page is 7024

Anyone going to tell CWGC about the typo on the gravestone and in their database?

Have already made an observation to CWGC about their Commemoration and Special Memorial differing - now awaiting a reply and suitable action.

Its already reported and changed. Not sure how recent your photo is? Headstone was replaced in 2022.

I volunteer with the Eyes On, Hands On (EOHO)  programme with the CWGC. Frank Keogh is on one of the site I look after. I reported the error and it was rectified.

That's great Mike - glad you have dealt with it.

I don't know the source of the photo posted earlier in the thread by Steve [FaG and their latest photo seems to be 2020].

It is a shame that the small photo that CWGC currently have against KEOGH's on-line commemoration is so poor that the details cannot be enlarged/read.  What's the point of CWGC posting photos which cannot be read?

Anyway all's good otherwise.

Hopefully, the CWGC photos will improve. As part of the checks and cleaning, we submit phots of all the headstones and they are in the process of adding all thephotos to the commemoration details on the search pages.
