Military court papers

Does anyone know if it is possible to get access to Military court papers, I have found my Great grandfather was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment, he served 1 year up at Rouen before being released in 1917 and went back to the front line, but I would like to find out why he was sentenced to 2 years.

Cheers

Hello Steve

As he wasn't shot, the short answer is that the records have been destroyed. However, if you browse the contents of classes WO84, WO86 and possibly WO90 at the National Archives (the indexes are online at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk) you might find a record of the charge and sentence.

Alternatively, if his service record has survived (try Ancestry) and includes his conduct sheet, that should tell you the answer.
