Don Posted 14 February , 2014 Posted 14 February , 2014 I found this poem written on a piece of scrap paper in a 1920 Diary ( the paper is very fragile)owned by Donough Mc Gillycuddy RIR. He has a MIC and survived. I have no idea who he wrote to or when. The Diary has legal submissions and accounts, but no mention of WW1 Since it's Valentines Day,I would like to dedicate it to all the Women members on the Forum. Gerry Poem.pdf
PHall Posted 14 February , 2014 Posted 14 February , 2014 Thank you so much for sharing this with us. A lovely thought.
Anneca Posted 14 February , 2014 Posted 14 February , 2014 Gerry, you're a sentimental old boot but thank you so much for the dedication. It certainly makes up for the red rose I didn't receive today! Do you know which Bn. of the RIR Donough was in? Anne
Don Posted 17 February , 2014 Author Posted 17 February , 2014 Thank you both for your nice comments. Anneca, I will try and find out Gerry
Don Posted 17 February , 2014 Author Posted 17 February , 2014 His MIC number is 20/20256.But no Bn number
Murrough Posted 17 February , 2014 Posted 17 February , 2014 Born in Galway, according to census, number indicates he was with 20th reserve Battalion RIR,went overseas as a draft at some stage, MIC says entitled to pair. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003123762/
Fattyowls Posted 18 February , 2014 Posted 18 February , 2014 Gerry, you unashamed romantic. If I'm being ultra critical it's not Shakespeare, it's not Yeats but it's from the heart. My love poetry was rubbish so I've no room to talk. Pete.
sassoon Posted 24 February , 2014 Posted 24 February , 2014 I know it's a few days late but a very nice gesture (and poem).
