My great uncle was captured and sent to/spent time in Heistenmoor - does anyone know anything about it?

He was with the 2nd battalion DCLI, anyone know when and where he was captured?

Incidentally, he died not long after the war, aged 41, it is claimed, due to ill-treatment received during his captivity.

Regards

Oh yea... the camp of Heistenmoor (or Heestenmoor) was situated north of Brunswick (or Braunschweig) if that`s more any help.

Thanks. That's where I found out about it - Behind the Wire.

The following is from Silent Battle, Canadian Prisoners of War in Germany, 1914 - 1919 by Desmond Morton

"in the autumn of 1917, he (Harry Mitton) was suddenly transferred to the grim punishment camp at Hestenmoor to cut peat and perform weary hours of stillgestanden"
