Cannot find him on CWGC.

SDGW has him in 2RWR KIA on 9.10.1917

MIC confirms his number and regiment.

Any ideas please.

I haven't found him on CWGC either. He also seems to be the only 2 Bn KIA on the day,as I was trying to trace any others to their burial details. One Warwicks man (2/4 Bn) and others not of 2 Bn were buried at Fauborg D'Amiens around the time and within a day or two of each other. Might this be a case for the In From the Cold Project,if no one can find your man ?

Tried everything I can think of without any luck he is on SDGW for this date, cannot even find him on any census returns 1901/ 1911, same name registered Basford in 1898, still no joy. Agree with Sotonmate re the IFTC Project.

In the index to GRO War Death Army Other Ranks (1914 to 1921) there is an entry for Ernest C Barnes, 27488 in a unit called Wars who died in 1917.

The Warwicks medal rolls are arranged alphabetically by surname and there is no E Barnes of any name let alone Ernest or Ernest C. 27488 in the Warwicks was allocated to Pte William Burton - 4876 1/8 Notts and Derby and 27488 10th RWR and he was killed on 15.6.1917 according to CWGC.

I'm getting confused now

Clarance E on 1901 Census and just Clarence on 1911 Census - both Beeston

Soldiers Died GW lists 178 men (not including officers) of the 2nd battalion died on this date 9-10-1917 I have checked every name against the CWGC site and the ONLY one missing is Clarence, of all these men 5 are buried The Buttes Cemetery and all the rest are on the Tyne Cot memorial apart from one (Pte Bass) who actually has a grave in Tyne Cot cemetery. Doesn't help much I suppose but thought I would do it anyway. Ralph.

Thanks Diane, thought I was going potty. Ralph.

Yes I am at present working out who's who on the day, as my Great uncle died that day.

Very few known buried that day, I have walked every grave in Buttes New, there are many unknowns and several Warwick unknowns there.

Barnes remains a mystery.

In a perfect world, every name on a memorial such as Tyne Cot would have a corresponding unknown headstone somewhere, but no body/remains = no headstone.

Just edited my previous post, got the numbers wrong

Good spot on Pte. Bass, I researched the men some years ago and missed his burial. I suppose that some of the other unknowns could be buried in Tyne Cot.

It's ironic that The Butte was the 2RWR Headquarters for the attack that day.

I have no doubt that many of the unknowns in Tyne Cot relate to the Royal Warwicks given the proximity of the fighting around there.

3880 Pte Clarence Edward Barnes, my records show he enlisted at Stapleford (next to Beeston) in Notts and came from the Beeston area. BRONNO.

I've tried several different searches on the CWGC site for any link with Barnes and failed.

Do you think that I should contact IFCP?
