Mark Hone Posted 3 February , 2014 Posted 3 February , 2014 As part of my continuing research into Bury Grammar School old boy Captain Tom Cartman MC (cf threads on the discovery of his Great War scrapbook) I am trying to find out a little about the other First World War veterans who were his fellow Military Guard officers on the ill-fated 'Arandora Star' which was torpedoed off the coast of Donegal in July 1940. Cartman was the adjutant; his CO was Major Christopher Aleck Bethell, late Royal Tanks, who I believe was badly wounded serving with the Royal Scots Fusiliers early on in the war but recovered to serve on into the 1930s. Captain RIchard Henry Goddard was 2nd Middlesex Regiment and Lieutenant Edward Sydney William Miles was 7th KRRC. All were in their mid to late 40s and are commemorated on the Brookwood Memorial. If anyone knows anything more about these men, in particular their Great War service, I would be very interested.
