Andrea1065 Posted 2 February , 2014 Posted 2 February , 2014 Hi everyone, These four soldiers were my grandfathers cousins who sadly all died in the first world war. Many years a go a work colleague of my brother showed him a publication of the boys who had sadly lost their lives in the great war who lived in Kingsland/Aymestrey. I remember there being a picture of the boys and a little write up about them. At the time I wasnt that interested, but since doing my family tree would love to get hold of a copy. The lady who had it originally has lost the publication. Why dont people put these things safe. If anyone could help I would be very grateful. All the best everyone. Andrea1
6th Shropshires Posted 3 February , 2014 Posted 3 February , 2014 Hi Andrea I can not help with the photo but two of the Payne were killed with the K.S.L.I. and I have a bit of information on their Army service and where they were killed if you want it. Annette
Andrea1065 Posted 9 February , 2014 Author Posted 9 February , 2014 Hi Annette Thank you for your reply. Yes that would be great. I dont know if you can help with this one my great uncle George Morgan was also in the KSLI during the first world war, he did survive but im not sure if he was discharged due to being gassed which sadly took his life at a young age. I have looked on various records but I cant find a definite match. He was born in 1893/4 in Chapel Lawn in Shropshire, which is near Clun. Many thanks Andrea
ARABIS Posted 9 February , 2014 Posted 9 February , 2014 It might be worth contacting local papers like the Hereford Times to see if they have anything in their archives.
Andrea1065 Posted 9 February , 2014 Author Posted 9 February , 2014 I have done that but they are busy doing some project to do with the first world war
6th Shropshires Posted 9 February , 2014 Posted 9 February , 2014 Hi Andrea I have several George Morgans, I have ruled out most for one reason or another, which left me with two possibles -one I have living at 2 Little Falley, Lydbury North (spelling may Folly ?), for the other man I have no details what so ever on where he was from except men near his number came from mostly Shrewsbury and Oswestry areas. 17285 Pte. Eli Charles, Payne, Born Kingsland. Enlisted Leominster about Late January or early Feb 1915. Landed in France on 23/06/15 and joined the 5th K.S.L.I. K. in A. 25/09/15 Aged 20. Son of Arthur Henry & Ann Payne of Shirleath, Kingsland. His name is on the Menin Gate Memorial. The 5th K.S.L.I. took part in subsidiary operations at Ypres on 25-09-15. They attacked from trenches near Y Wood and reached the Germans 2nd line that ran from behind Bellewaarde Farm to the lake. Other units on their flanks had not been able to advance as far as the 5th K.S.L.I. so with both flanks in the air and German troops massing for a counter-attack they fell back to original line (if you have facebook, I have a page about the K.S.L.I. and on it I have a photo of the area the 5th Battalion attacked over + map). He was reported missing in the Ludlow Advertiser 16-10-15 (dated under 3rd Oct), and later in the Ludlow Adv. 19-02-16 (under 6th Feb) the following is recorded-Previously reported missing now reported killed. Info. from Victory/British War Medal Roll, 1914-15 Star Medal Roll, M.I.C., C.W.G.C. & Soldiers Died. Note He was also attached to the 10th Entrenching Battalion-likely to have been when he first landed but could have been attached at any time. 17305 Pte. Albert, Payne, Born Yatton, Resided Kingsland Enlisted Leominster about 5th Feb 1915 Landed in France on 25/08/15 and joined the 1st K.S.L.I. Wounded -very possibly some time between 21st & 23rd April 1916 during the 1st Battalions counter-attack to regain lost trenches at Morteldje Est., Ypres. Try this link for more detailed account of this battle-http://www.hellfirecorner.co.uk/burgoyne.htm Joined the 6th K.S.L.I. but I do not know when. D. of W. 24/04/17 Aged 23. Son of Arthur Henry & Ann Payne, of Shirleoth, Kingsland. Buried in Bray Military Cemetery, Somme (II.H.11). I do not know for sure when he was fatally wounded but I think it was on the 22nd April 1917, when the 6th Battalion made a small advance at Havrincourt Wood. Info. from 1914-15 Star Medal Roll, Victory/British War Medal Roll, Ludlow Adv. 20-05-16, C.W.G.C. & Soldiers Died. Annette
