Hi,

Could anyone please tell me which battle insignia was worn by the different companies of the 1st Border regiment (29th Division-87th Brigade) during the attack on Beaumont-Hamel on the 1st July 1916 (Battle of the Somme).

I believe that the insignia for the 29th Division was a red triangle worn on both upper arms and that a patch worn on the back included this red triangle combined with another half triangle to form a square. Also, there would be a marking on the helmet with the same colour as the second half triangle on the back.

Is this correct and,if so, what were the different patches worn by the different companies of the 1st Border and what was the marking on the helmet?

Thanks,

Gerald

Sorry, I meant "combined with another half triangle to form a square. Also, there would be a marking on the helmet with the same colour as the second half triangle on the back.

1st Bn Border Regiment wore the 29th Division sign on both sleeves and stencilled on the front of the helmet or helmet cover. The battalion sign was a red rectangle or stripe 2" x 1/2" which was worn on the back of the collar by all ranks. The badge was worn horizontally by officers and vertically by other ranks, this mark was stencilled on both sides of the helmet.

Thank you very much, Mike. I didn't realise the signs were worn on the collar. I thought they were a little lower down the back.

Thanks,

Gerald
