clairedelaney Posted 1 February , 2014 Posted 1 February , 2014 Dear All Wondering if anybody can help with an entry in a Royal Flying Corps /RAF service record. The relates to my Great Grandfather's return to the UK from France after WW1 and states: "25.G. Soft. Chaucer. W3883. Eng. per HS Brighton 10.9.19" I understand W3883 is the casualty card (sadly has been lost) and HS is Hospital Ship. Can anybody advise as to the meaning of Soft. Chaucer. (at least it looks like the word 'Soft'?) Any help is appreciated - it's been puzzling us for ages. Kind regards Claire
KevinBattle Posted 2 February , 2014 Posted 2 February , 2014 Sjt Chaucer? It seems to make two references to W3083, which wouldn't be necessary if only referring to one person/event ....???? I'm assuming that Serjeant Chaucer is the one allowing him to travel to England on HS Brighton - perhaps!!
clairedelaney Posted 5 February , 2014 Author Posted 5 February , 2014 Thanks for your suggestions. I'll explore these routes and see if I can find out anything else.
Chris_Baker Posted 5 February , 2014 Posted 5 February , 2014 It's "soft chancre" and is usually associated with a sexually transmitted disease!
Admin kenf48 Posted 5 February , 2014 Admin Posted 5 February , 2014 As Kevin says I think there are two entries the second clearly being (to) Eng(land) per (on) H(ospital) S(hip) Brighton then the date 1(?)0.9.19 i.e. 10th September 1919 the first entry is more problematic especially without the column heads but we have G. (an abbreviation? G(rounded) wild guess) then I think it's a medical condition which is beyond me 'Soft ?' ah thanks Chris that's why it was beyond me What happened next? Ken
