French letters from Gallipoli

Recommended Posts

I am looking for letters home from French soldiers in the Dardanelles, but am shooting blanks, not having used French resources previously.

Any pals know of an online archive with one or more?

Hi

A lot of French archives are kept locally in each region where the soldiers were from. Access can be difficult and a lots of documents are not open to the public yet.

I would suggest to contact the Dardanelles association, they should be able to help you: http://www.dardanelles.niloo.fr/

Is it me, or should this thread be re-titled?

No, it is not just you Steven - I can hardly see my screen as the tears won't stop!

PS Interesting thread though.

If the title wasn't bad enough, he then talks about firing blanks!!!!

It was the blanks that finished me off - haven't had a dry eye since!

Make your mind up b3rn, do you want letters from the French or from 'Johnny' Turk? ;)

On a more serious note, have you made contact with Peter Hart late of these parts? I have heard him speak on the French at Gallipoli, he might know more on their letters. http://www.peterhartmilitary.com/

Letters from the Sous-Lieutenant Pomiro, 175 R.I, have been published recently.

This website gives some extracts:

Hope it helps

Gareth, nice one. Peter Hart's book is a cracker, I'll get it again from the library and check the sources. I've seen his photos from Gallipoli, where many a large piece has been saddled.
