Jim Hastings Posted 27 January , 2014 Posted 27 January , 2014 Remembered today on the Forum is S (LSR)/2222 Pte Walter SHARP, a Special Reservist who joined the 2nd Sussex at Guinchy on 13th January 1915, a member of a draft of 210 men (mainly 'Kitchener men') from 3rd Sussex, who had landed in France on 11th January. Born (in 1893) and bred in Brighton, Walter had been a porter for a wine merchant, the son of Alexander, a one time baker and then house painter, and Jane. The family lived at 63 Cobden Road in Brighton. Within a fortnight of joining the battalion Walter was dead, killed either in the brick-stack 'Keep' or the increasingly dug trenches 2nd Sussex constructed for its defence, under almost constant sniping, shelling and machine gun fire. He died this day 99 years ago with Lt Harold Vernon HUTT of West Malling, Kent and Wallington, Surrey, who was shot dead in the Keep early in the morning; L/8745 Pte Benjamin ATTREE of Brighton; L/8230 L/Cpl Cyril GREEN; L/6073 Cpl William Thomas HODGE; L/8210 Pte William James PHILPOTT and G/1284 William BOURNE, who had landed in France a week before SHARP RIP all
