Wakefield was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Under Secretary for Air, and also a member of the Parliamentary committee instructed by the cabinet in 1940 to formulate a scheme of pre-entry into the RAF for the youth of the country in it’s hour of need. He had been elected MP for Swindon in 1935 and remained so until 1945, having been knighted in 1944 for his services to the war effort. Dave
