Guest jujurob Posted 21 January , 2014 Posted 21 January , 2014 Please can anyone offer me any advice. I am researching William Robinson. I believe he enlisted into 5th Batallion Lincolnshire Regiment at Gainsborough under number 2783. His number changed to 240650. I have discovered he was awarded the Military Medal in Dec 1917 and found some details in Sandalls Diary. He was made L/Cpl and died in action in October 1918 and I believe I have located the area of his final action from Sandalls Aurigny les fermes?. However my research skills are limited and I would really appreciate it if anyone can suggest how I can find out more about William. Many Thanks
sotonmate Posted 22 January , 2014 Posted 22 January , 2014 It was the 1/5 Battalion which first landed in France on 1 Mar 1915 with 138 Brigade of 46 Division. If you feel like you should also read the unit War Diary it is at Kew under WO95/2691/2 but is not yet digital and covers from your man's arrival on 1 March 1915. His number change was as a result of the Territorial Force Infantry re-numbering in 1917.The 1/5 also absorbed the 2/5 in Jul 1918 and then became the 5th. He has no known grave and is remembered on the VIS-EN-ARTOIS Memorial: http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/79200/VIS-EN-ARTOIS-MEMORIAL Later: I wonder if that is normal for a CWGC photo of a cemetery etc.not to appear on a link.

sotonmate Posted 23 January , 2014 Posted 23 January , 2014 rjd ..... thank you ! I am also gratified to see that you are trusted to live outside of the spare room in Milnrow !
Guest jujurob Posted 23 January , 2014 Posted 23 January , 2014 Many thanks for the information - I have obtained a copy of his informal will from the probate office and it was dated 1st March 1915 so that ties in.
