wwrsimon Posted 21 January , 2014 Share Posted 21 January , 2014 Hello everyone I'm looking for any info about William Hubert Leete, who was awarded a DFC in 1918. I assume he was attached to an RAF unit on observer duty - can anyone provide any details? Regards Simon
topgun1918 Posted 21 January , 2014 Share Posted 21 January , 2014 Simon Leete served in No 7 Sqn and the citation for his DFC (London Gazette of 3 August 1918) reads: "Lt. William Hubert Leete. A very successful observer who has been instrumental in bringing our heavy artillery fire on numerous occasions on the enemy's positions, causing great destruction." The award had been announced in the London Gazette of 2 July 1918. Graeme
Airshipped Posted 21 January , 2014 Share Posted 21 January , 2014 RAF Communiqué No.7, which relates to 13-19 May 1918, has the following: 18 May 1918 "Lt L.H. Brown and Lt W.H. Leete, 7 Sqn, whilst on artillery observation were attacked by an EA scout. A burst was fired at the EA from the rear gun and the EA was seen to go down in a straight dive, and is confirmed by an AA battery to have crashed north of St Julien". Guest Posted 4 November , 2019 Share Posted 4 November , 2019 (edited) Hi, I realise this is a very old post, but L H Brown was my grandfather. I have his flying log which mentions Leete and the day they were attacked in may 1918. You can see more on the site attached. Its wonderful how connected people are 100 years after the event! http://www.brisk.org.uk/rfc/rfc9.html Edited 5 November , 2019 by Guest type error
