warbuff1 Posted 21 January , 2014 Posted 21 January , 2014 Hi all, Just thought i'd share some info with you at these early stages. My friend and I, Andy Partington, work on the Railway based at Manchester Piccadilly Station. For years we've tried to organise a new memorial for the men lost from the then London Road Goods Depot London North Western Railway. And finally we have got things moving! Hopefully we are able to secure funding from Train Companies, Network Rail and Railway Heritage Fund but at this stage this has all to be decided. Our first meeting to sort the details out takes place this month. Were looking to get moving and have new memorial in place this year if possible to gain maximum publicity around the centenary and think this is a fitting time to pay tribute to those lost. Use of social media, contacts and any volunteers will be used to help and raise awareness where needed. The original memorial was situated on London Road at the Junction with Fairfield Street but in the 1960's as London Road was redeveloped into Manchester Poccadilly it vanished into thin air .Strange as the brass plaque for the Second World War men was situated underneath it and it still survives.Luckily two photos of the original have been secured. One is a close up so were able to identify the names and engraving on it and the second showing where the original was postioned.it contained 87 names and also honoured the 580 men from London Road who served. Having researched the names on LNWR roll of Honour & CWGC site we've been able to identify approx 50 men with their respective regiments/ branches of the armed forces. Sadly the remainder have either common surnames eg smith or bring up huge amounts of hits on CWGC. Around 17 men served in various battalions of the Manchester Regiment & approx 13 in the Lancashire Fusilers. It is our hope to try and identify these men and have a display next to the memorial showing their photos with their name or a blank sillouette for those we cant find. This will be a huge task I know and unfortunately one I or anyone I know cannot undertake due to work and other committments. Volunteers who would be able to give their research or time in this would be greatly appreciated. Unpaid i'm afraid but credit and public recognition will be given to those who help. I will try and post photos I have of the memorial and also the list of men named on it if i can get it too upload.( Not too tech savvy) Updates will be posted here and I hope to have some more info and positive results to share with you after the meeting. I hope we can get some forum members involved in some way along with WFA, RBL and either/both Duke of Lancasters & Royal Fusiliers (Modern day Manchesters & Lancashire Fusiliers I beleive) Thanks Wayne
ralphjd Posted 21 January , 2014 Posted 21 January , 2014 Wayne. Brilliant. Get the names posted on here and I will certainly give up my time to research them for you. Ralph.

John_Hartley Posted 21 January , 2014 Posted 21 January , 2014 Wayne Excellent news - I recall us discussing the missing original memorial some while back. If there's anything I can do to help, please shout. It'd be a good idea to post the names of those you havnt identified - you never know who knows what! John
ralphjd Posted 21 January , 2014 Posted 21 January , 2014 John. If you can advise Wayne how to post his list on here, be ever so grateful, my email is an absolute bugg**. Ralph.
Stoppage Drill Posted 21 January , 2014 Posted 21 January , 2014 Well done, Wayne. I remember the old memorial. There was a staircase from the Fairfield Street tunnel which brought you out on the front concourse of London Road Station, just where the busses used to stop. This was a shortcut so you didn't have to walk up the approach ramp, and so I recall passing that memorial so many times when dashing for a train. If memory serves, it was very similar to the plaque which was outside the Hyde Road bus depot, a couple of miles away. Great War memorials all over Manchester in those days, one hardly gave them a second glance back then. This doesn't help you, but I wish you all the luck.
John_Hartley Posted 21 January , 2014 Posted 21 January , 2014 Not sure why Wayne is having problem posting from what I assume is a Word document. Cut and paste should work Or just type it in.
